Common is the latest performer to join an already impressive line-up scheduled to appear at the taping of BET’s fifth annual Honors show. Every winter, the show celebrates the year’s highlights by honoring the achievements of African American artists and luminaries. This year’s event will honor living-legend Stevie Wonder, singer Mariah Carey, poet Maya Angelou, film director Spike Lee, and more. According the Hollywood Reporter, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, Cicely Tyson will also be performing to at this year’s event, while Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrance Howard, and Willow Smith are all scheduled to appear.
No word yet on what kind of performance we can expect from Common, though his recent collaboration and ongoing admiration for legendary poet Maya Angelou can lead us to believe that the Chicago rapper is likely to give us something that will somehow relate to the poet.
Last month, Common released his newest album entitled The Dreamer, The Believer that features a spoken word by Maya Angelou on the track The Dreamer.
Taping for the fifth annual BET Honors will take place on Saturday, January 14 at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. The show will air for Black History Month on February 13 at 9 p.m. on BET
